Testing adding Digg vote button to every post

A blog reader commented in my post Another way of adding graphic to your blog Header indicating problem with implementing adding a Digg button to every posts as described in this site: Add Digg vote button on Blogger and asking for help. So I decided to test it out in one of my blogs Generating Revenue from your Website and did it successfully. Check it out for yourself.

The way to do this easily is to sign into your Dashboard, then for the selected blog, click LAYOUT, then click the EDIT HTML sub-tab. This will open the template editor window. Check the [ ] Expand template widget. When the template have been fully expanded, click your mouse inside the template editor window, press ctrl+A to highlight the whole template, right-click and select "copy" to copy the whole template into clipboard. Open Notepad, make sure the word wrap is off (in the Menu Bar, click "Format" then make sure the Word Wrap is turned off), paste the template into the empty Notepad. You need to find the tag

<p><data:post.body/></p>

in the template
.
Again, click inside the Notepad and press ctrl+A to highlight all the codes, slide the verical scroll bar back to the top, in the Menu Bar, click EDIT then FIND and paste the above tag into the FIND field. Click FIND NEXT and that tag should then be highlighted in Notepad.

Replace the above tag with this codes (to facilitate this, you may want to intoduce some empty lines to separate the tag from the rest of the template).

<p>
<!-- DIGG -->
<div style='float:right; margin-left:10px;'>
<script type='text/javascript'>
digg_url = '<data:post.url/>';
</script>
<script src='http://digg.com/tools/diggthis.js' type='text/javascript'/>
</div>
<data:post.body/>
</p>

Go back to the template editor (the whole template should still be highlighted if you have not done anything other than copying it into clipboard). Click the DELETE button. You should have an empty template editor window. Paste the content of the clipboard into the template editor window.

Preview, and if you see the Digg button in the Preview, save the template.

As always, before you make any changes to your template, always backup your template first.

This test is so successful, and having that Digg vote button in every posts of your blog is so useful, I will likely implement it into all my main blogs.

Update same day: The hack is so easy to implement I have impemented it for my major blogs. However, I am having second thoughts about it as anyone clicking on the Digg vote button gets taken away from the site (to Digg site). It doesn't open in a new window. I am going to experiment to see if I can get it to open in new window. Further update: 2 attempts succeed in displaying the Digg vote button, but clicking on it still lead to Digg site in the same window.

Testing uploading video to Google Video and embedding of the video in a post

I used Windows Movie Maker (available in Windows) to make this video. I am testing uploading of the video to Google Video and embedding the video into this post. Well, the test have gone well, and the script for embedding into the blog seemed simpler than Youtube on which I have done another post at Testing embedding of video from Youtube in a post (click "BACK" button to get back to this post. The width of the video was 400px, exactly the same as the width of the main column of this blog. It means I didn't have to do any editing to the script to make the video fit into the main column of this blog. The width of the video from Youtube was wider, making it necessary to edit the script, and not only that, there were two places in the Youtube script where you have to alter the width and the height, whereas in Google video, the width and the height only occur once in the script, making editing easier if editing is needed.

I put the script from Google Video for embedding into this blog into the scroll box below for your examination:

<embed style="width:400px;height:326px;" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=-6076656272584301128&hl=en" id="VideoPlayback" align="middle" quality="best" bgcolor="#ffffff" scale="noScale" salign="TL" FlashVars="playerMode=embedded"></embed>

Update: 10:05: Just to make sure that it is due to the difference between Google Video and Youtube, and not the video I upload, I tried uploading the same video to Youtube, and it confirmed that video uploaded to Youtube has a width of 425 compared to 400 for Google Video, and there were two occurances of width and height in Youtube. I paste the script from Youtube in the scrollbox below for comparison:

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zDR0HCek8-8"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zDR0HCek8-8" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Feed URL for New Blogger

Previously, with the old classic Blogger account, getting your feed URL is easy. You just sign into Dashboard, select the relevant blog, click SETTINGS tab, then SITE FEED sub-tab, and you will see the feed URL for the blog. It will generally be of the form:

http://yourblog.blogspot.com/atom.xml

Actually, you don't even have to do that. All you have to do is to type atom.xml to the end of the URL of your blog.

However, now with the New Blogger, you do that, and you will just be given a drop-down menu to select whether you want your feed to be FULL or SHORT, and a box for you to type the feed item footer if you wish. There is no indication of what the feed URL for the blog should be.

Amazon Products on RSS Feed

Someone on the Google Blogger Help group has always given this:

http://yourblog.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/summary
http://yourblog.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

(replace "yourblog" with the actual part of your blog URL in the feed URL for the New Blogger. However, I have typed in other URL like

http://blogger-tricks.blogspot.com/atom.xml
http://blogger-tricks.blogspot.com/rss.xml

into the address bar of a browser and got some result, a mixture of HTML tags and text. In fact, if I use the Internet Explorer, I can read the feed in formatted form.

To settle the matter, I decided to make some tests. This is where having more than 1 browser comes in handy. I have 4 - Internet Explorer, FireFox (favourite), Opera and Flock. I opened all 4 browsers, and signed into Google Reader with 4 different Google account simultaneously. I then tried subscribing to the following blogs in the 4 different Google Reader for 3 different blogs:

Computer and Internet Articles (New Blogger account and template, feed set to full)

Blogger Tips and Tricks (New Blogger account and template, feed set to short)

Blogger for Dummies (New Blogger account, old classic template, feed set to short)

Natural Remedies (if I remember correctly, at the time of test, the blog was using the old classic template. It is now using the New Blogger template)

I then tested subscribing to the feed using 4 different URL's

http://foodasmedicine.blogspot.com/atom.xml
http://foodasmedicine.blogspot.com/rss.xml
http://foodasmedicine.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/summary
http://foodasmedicine.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

and so forth.

Result of the tests:

For the blog where the feed was set to full, the full articles was displayed in full by the reader for all three, except for
http://foodasmedicine.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/summary
in which case, the feed was displayed as a summary.

For blogs (old classic template or New Blogger templates) where the feed is set to short, the reader displayed the posts in summarised form, except for

http://foodasmedicine.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

in which case only the title, author and date was displayed. This is because I used
Flock browser for the feed reader. To make sure it is not due to the browser, I tried using other browsers for other blogs with short feed like

http://foodasmedicine.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

and got the same result - only the post title, author and date was displayed in the reader.

I used the Google Reader for all the tests above. I checked to see if I get the same result using other online feed reader and signed up for Bloglines (Newsgator took too long to load). I subscribed to

http://blogger-tricks.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

and got the same result - only the post titles, the author and the dates were displayed in the reader. With the original

http://blogger-tricks.blogspot.com/atom.xml

I got the post titles and a summary of the post.

Conclusion. All four feed URL works, but for blogs with feed set to short, it is better not to use

http://yourblog.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

as all you will get will be only the post titles, the author and the dates.

(actually, things don't seem to be consistent, so perhaps the best is to use the feed URL obtained by the method in How to get the feed URL for New Blogger)

A comment from Miska which I feel readers should read and is additional information which I feel can belong to the post:

"My experience has been that the old url doesn't update correctly. I have my blogs fed into my yahoo and they weren't updating but maybe once a week when I was posting everday so I switched to the new rss one and they update on time now...don't know if it is a mixture of the reader and the url or not but that is what happened for me in My Yahoo."

Testing Hackosphere peekaboo expandable post summary

There is an easy to implement expandable post summary at Expandable Post Summary for New Blogger. The advantage of this is, it is easy to implement. The disadvantage - there will be a "Read More" link at the bottom of a short post even if you have no further content beyound what is in the post summary. I partly overcome this by putting an END OF POST at the end of a short post.

If you are still not satisfied with this, you can try to implement Hackoshpere's expandable post summary with peekaboo view. It is a bit harder to implement, but it has been done for this blog: Anything Chinese. You will see the "Read More" link at the bottom of the long posts in the main page, but I purposely wrote a short post Why the emphasis on things Chinese?. If you visit the homepage now, you will see that the other posts have "Read More" links at the bottom of the post but not for Why the emphasis on things Chinese?. "Read More" links will only be seen in long posts in the homepage, but not in individual post pages.

As more articles are published in this blog Anything Chinese, the short post without "Read More" link will disappear from the homepage, and what I am trying to show will disappear, so to make a permanent record of the homepage as it is now, I will post screenshots of the homepage below, with the "Read More" links circled in red to show it more clearly. You will see in the screenshots there is no "Read More" (remarks in green) link in the short post with the title "Why the emphasis on things Chinese" (click on screenshots to enlarge).

Expandable post summary and search engines

If you want to implement expandable post summary for your blog, the instructions are given in these 2 posts:

Expandable post summary for New Blogger

Testing phydeaux3 peekaboo expandable post summary

Someone asked about whether search engine will crawl the whole post if one used the expandable post summary to only display part of the message, with a "Read More" link to read the whole post. Panther of Beta Blogger for Dummies gave a link to a site Spider View where you can type in the URL of a site and view how a search engine sees that site. Expandable post summary has been implemented for this blog Good Health Information so I decided to test it out.

Currently, the latest post in Good Health Information is Relieving Depression from the Inside and the summary displayed in the home or index page is:

Relieving Depression from the Inside
by Steven Godlewski

Everybody gets down or feels blue from time to time. It's a natural thing. But others get truly and seriously depressed - unable to cope with day-to-day life or to live their lives in anything resembling a normal fashion.

Depression comes in many forms, and affects more than 18 million American adults each year. Over a million preschoolers have currently been diagnosed as clinically depressed. 15% of most developed countries suffer from severe depression, and 30% of women suffer from depression - and 41% of those won't seek treatment. In fact, 80% of the people who are now suffering from any form of depression are not currently being treated. Many simply don't recognize the signs.

with a "Read More" link below that. (If you go to Good Health Information weeks after today, that post will probably not be in the main page anymore, but you can read the full post at Relieving Depression from the inside and you can compare with what is displayed by Spider View when I typed in the URL http://good-health-information.blogspot.com which I put in the scrollbox below:

people who are now suffering from any form of depression are not currently being treated. many simply dont recognize the signs.experts report that depression will be the second biggest killer in the united states by the year 2020 and 15% of people with depression currently commit suicide each year.while the condition of depression has received more awareness and understanding, the treatment for depression hasnt improved very much. there have been many new drugs introduced to the market place to treat depression, but he side affects are often worse or more serious than the depression! in fact, there seem to be just as many lawsuits against the makers of these drugs as there are drugs!while everybody agrees that depression must be treated, the method of treatment has not been entirely agreed upon. only recently has it been acknowledged that depression causes more than mental pain - it also causes physical pain. some experts believe depression should be treated with medication. others lean towards therapy and counseling. some believe that sufferers need both medication and counseling.in spite of all of this, more and more people are suffering from depression each year. the problem is not going away - its getting bigger and there are still no viable solutions in sight.what many people, including health care professionals, rarely stop to consider is what is causing the depression. instead of focusing on the cause, they only want to find relief. unfortunately, finding the cause is often part of finding relief, especially when it comes to depression.some depression is caused by life events, and this type of depression usually passes untreated - because its natural. for instance, when there is a death in the family, the surviving members of that family may experience a period of depression and grief. when one loses a job, they may be down until they find a new job. again, this is depression that is perfectly natural and normal, as long as the feelings of depression dont linger on or become too severe.other types of depression are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. too much or too little production of serotonin in the brain causes one to feel depressed. people who work the graveyard shift often experience depression simply because they are not getting enough sunshine - which produces serotonin.what many people dont realize is that toxins in the body can also cause depression. those toxins make you not feel well - or not feel ‘quite right. you obviously arent sick, and you have no reason to feel depressed - but you arent sleeping well, your energy isnt what it should be, and you may even have aches and pains. no matter what you do, those feelings persist. depression is imminent!antioxidants, which detoxify the body and cleanse the cells, have proven to also be natural anti-depressants - with no side effects.severe depression should be treated by a doctor. even mild depression may need treatment. but consider using an antioxidant as well to see how you feel, and also get the counseling that should be recommended to see what the underlying cause of your depression is.steven godlewski is a self-made monday, march 26, 2007 tips for guaranteed healthy and fast weight loss tips for guaranteed healthy and fast weight lossby: nathalie fiset almost everybody, at some point in their of life, has experienced weight-related problems. most of us, women and men alike, are not content with what we see. we feel that unless we are wafer thin like the models and celebrities we see on television and magazines, we will never be attractive and beautiful. on the other hand, there are an increasing number of obese individuals across the world. becoming overweight has become a trend in both the west and east hemispheres. the increasing popularity of processed and fast foods have exacerbated the obesity situation. there are many diseases related to being overweight, such as hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, coronary heart disease, to name a few. thus, you need to find ways to incorporate weight loss activities and good eating habits to our daily routine. before you start any type of diet, however, you need to go to a physician first. the doctor will tell you if your weight loss plan is appropriate for your health condition. furthermore, the physician will also assist you in determining if you really need to lose weight and how much weight you need to shed. many people develop eating disorders because they do not visit a doctor before drastically changing their eating habits and starting a diet plan. if you want to lose weight fast, healthy and permanently, you need to follow the tips below. maintain a balanced diet the reason why many people are overweight is partly due to an unbalanced diet. if you eat too much from one food group, you wont be able to get the vitamins and nutrients that your body need. a balanced diet is composed of protein, dairy food, a little bit of fat from healthy oil, fruit and vegetables, and good carbohydrates -- at least 5 portions every day. many professionals suggest a diet that is composed of mostly carbohydrate, moderate protein intake, and a little bit of fat. however, there are many diets espousing a huge amount of protein intake and a dramatic decrease in carbohydrates. before you apply such diets to your daily routine, you need to talk with a physician first. this high-protein diet may not be ideal for some people, such as those with kidney disease. increase servings of fruit and vegetables fruits and vegetables are good sources of vitamins and minerals that our body need. such food supplies us with vitamin a that is good for our eyes, vitamin c that boosts our immune system, beta-carotene that helps protects our body from the damage of free radicals, and nutrients. most fruits and vegetables are high in fiber and low calorie, so they also help clean our colon and make us feel fuller. canned fruits and vegetables are acceptable; however, there is no substitute for the real thing. stay away from junk food and sugar-loaded drinks try eliminating junk food and soda from your diet for a week or two, and you will surely feel and see the difference. maybe the reason why it is called junk food is due to its poor nutritional value. try looking at a junk foods label, not only is it full of saturated fat, but also usually high in salt or sugar, or both. aside from water, most of the things you drink are also loaded with calories. soda and sweetened fruit juices are mainly sugar. thus, no matter how little you eat, but if you still drink lots of soda and sweetened beverages, you will still continue to gain weight. dont skip breakfast even if you are in a hurry or late for work or school, you need to grab a bite. it would be better if your breakfast is healthy – probably an apple, oatmeal and a glass of nonfat milk. if you miss breakfast, you most probably will feel hungrier the rest of the day. in order for our body function properly, we need energy from the food we eat. if you skip breakfast, or a meal or two, your bodys metabolism will slow down to compensate for the lack of energy supply. more often than not, people who skip meals, particularly the first meal of the day, will binge later in the day. so, even if you skipped breakfast, you will have a tendency to eat a lot during lunch or dinner. start exercising many of us spend an extended number of hours in our offices. we get stuck sitting down in front of the computer for more than eight hours. when we get home, we spend another hour or two to check e-mails and chat with friends. thus, we dont expend most of the calories from the food we eat and those excess calories go straight to our belly, arms and thighs. if you want to increase your metabolism, you must start exercising. brisk walking is a good way to start your exercise routine. if you do not have time to go to the gym, you need to find ways to increase your activities. try sports activities that you will enjoy – boxing, badminton, or spelunking. there are many to fat burning activities to choose from. the tips above will not let you lose 10 pounds overnight. however, in the long run, such changes will help you become healthier and fitter. the weight loss you will experience will be more permanent. about the author dr nathalie fiset is a family ayurvedic medicine is one of the oldest traditional systems of health and disease management. the history of ayurveda goes back to thousand of years. the primary goal of ayurveda has been twofold – promotion of health and managing the disease. come, let us explore the salient features of this great system of health, lifestyle and medicine of ayurvedic medicine. one of the most beautiful features of ayurvedic treatment or ayurveda is that it is not merely a therapy or system of medicine. ayurveda is essentially a holistic approach toward life, health and disease management. ayurvedic approach includes the judicious use of medicinal herbs, minerals, diet, lifestyle, spirituality and yoga. ayurveda has been the pioneer for maintaining the holistic approach in medicine. ayurvedic principles are in the foundational role for this holistic approach in medicine. ayurvedic treatment is based on personalized regimen for every individual. god and nature created each one of us in a unique way and medicine should regard our individuality. ayurveda stands for our individuality in theory and in practice. the personalized approach of ayurvedic medicine is manifested in several conditions – when we consider the conditions of ayurveda doshas or humors and select the ayurveda body types, when we choose herbs, when we consider age and time of treatment, when we consider the geographic location of the person, when we advise food and lifestyle, when we evaluate the individual physical and mental tolerance and during practically dozens of other situations. some medical authorities attribute the emergence of social and preventive medicine totally to modern medicine. ayurveda right from its inception uphold two basic purposes – enhancement of health and prevention of disease. there are guideposts regarding diet, daily regimen, hygiene, immunity boosting and rejuvenation. ayurveda considers the appropriate treatment to that management which relieves the disease and doesnt cause any other disease as a result of treatment. this is brought about through balancing the qualities and synergistic planning and formulation of medicinal herbs. however, getting side effects free treatment is the toughest objective for any system of therapy. rejuvenative treatment is given so much importance in ayurveda that out of eight branches in ancient ayurveda, one was fully devoted to rejuvenation, anti-ageing, promotion of health and geriatric health. ayurveda considers each individual as a physical, social, mental and spiritual being. for social integrity, ayurveda supports both moral and spiritual principles and teaches that they are essential for the health of society. ayurvedic panchakarma therapy is meant chiefly for purification of body. panchakarma helps to detox our body thoroughly. the effect of proper diet and herbal supplements increases substantially after purification therapy. ayurvedic herbs are the chief therapeutic agent in ayurveda. natural medicinal herbs are great healing agents with very little or no side effects. most of the uses of ayurvedic herbs are being validated by modern herbal research. some of the toxic and poisonous herbs are used after their purification when they are free of their harmful effect. several minerals and animal products are also used in india in ayurvedic treatment. these minerals and animal derivatives are purified and undergo special calcination processes. calcination procedures increase their bioavailability and free them from harmful effects. the use of ayurvedic calcined minerals is not much popular outside indian subcontinent. the world as a whole is underway to understand and use these preparations as latest technologies like hpcl studies, clinical research trials report, toxicity reports, nanotechnology are affirming their safety and efficacy. ayurvedic treatment includes diet, exercise and lifestyle as an integral part of treatment. so there is plenty of advice on what to eat, what to avoid and about lifestyle and exercise. health is the dynamic balance of the body parts and their functioning. and it should be the goal of every individual to be responsible for one’s health because health is the foundational to all kind of pursuits in our lives. ayurvedic medicine helps individuals and the entire society to lead a healthier and happier life. start living a healthier and happier or a woman who did not suffer the gnawing problem of zits. however, even though this problem is skin deep, its effects germinate into bouts of despair and social angst, which jeopardizes quality of life.digging into the roots of adult acnesebum secreted from the hair follicles moves to the skin pores and lubricates the skin. but sometimes the oil glands expand, producing an excess of sebum, which ultimately gets trapped in the hair follicle and clogs the pores. these clogged pores permit bacteria and growth of propionibacterium acnes. this bacteria causes inflammation of the hair follicle and the surrounding skin and thus acne emerges.though till now the exact causes of adult acne are not known, most of the theories suggest hormonal imbalances as the root cause. some other causes proposed are evolutionary biology, diet, stress, vitamin deficiency and the list goes on.some effective treatments to get rid of adult acnestudies reveal that vitamin a plays an important role in the reduction of serum and keratin production and thus minimizes their growth in follicle comedos. so, nourish your system with vitamin a and take at least five servings of vegetables and fresh
